Sooty Sheerwaters

These guys were busy diving for anchovies or ooligans - hard to say - the other night in the thousands, reeling with the wind and waves, plunged through by gigantic brown pelicans, ringed by raucous gulls of all sorts, the water stippled by their plenty. They migrate from New Zealand, and appeared at our little cove like a marvel last night, but tonight, they are all gone. Could be, apparently, anywhere.

Beware of Teeth!

They say that sharks are coming in to feast on baby porpoises and seals hereabouts. Lifeguards are warning people in the surf. Last night, I counted nine surfers our in the swell. Be careful, everyone.

Newport NOAA

Newport is pretty quiet now, but once NOAA arrives, it's going to be pretty busy! With the fabulous acquarium already there, Newport, Oregon is going to be a fantastic ocean science location. We already loved Yaquina Head, not to mention Sylvia Beach Hotel, and now, wow!

Twitter Over Capacity

It's like a form of interoceanic communication. No wonder people have gone to it, it's like curlews or salps talking and talking.
